<p>We are happy to announce that the International Workshop entitled, &#8220;Towards the Comparative Study of Kitabs in Southeast Asia&#8221; will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at Sophia University in Tokyo. The workshop will deal with the progress of catalog-making of Southeast Asian kitabs collected by Sophia University, the significance of the collection and the catalog, the findings on the kitabs in the collection, and the publication of kitabs in Southeast Asia. Problems and prospects of catalog-making and potentials of studies utilizing the collection, will also be discussed. Researchers, scholars, librarians, and graduate students who are interested, are welcome to attend the workshop.<br />

Minangkabau menangis! Gempa berkekuatan 7.6 skala Richter mengguncang wilayah  bagian Barat Sumatra ini. Kerusakan akibat gempa Minangkabau ini dipastikan lebih besar dari musibah gempa di Jawa Barat beberapa waktu sebelumnya.</p>
<p>Kami, atas nama keluarga besar Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (Manassa) menyatakan duka yang sebesar-besarnya, semoga keluarga korban diberi kesabaran, dan situasi dapat segera pulih kembali.<br />

Dalam konteks kelimuan, Minangkabau sangat kaya. Wilayah ini seakan tak pernah berhenti memberikan inspirasi dilakukannya berbagai penelitian oleh sarjana, baik di dalam maupun di luar negeri. Minangkabau telah menghantarkan puluhan mahasiswa meraih gelar magister dan doktrornya melalui penelitian atas kekayaan kearifan dan khazanah lokal Minangkabau. Pun Minangkabau telah menghantarkan para peneliti dari dalam dan luar negeri menyelesaikan tugas dan proyek penelitiannya.</span></p>
<p>Demikian pula dalam bidang pernaskahan Nusantara. Minangkabau adalah salah satu kantong naskah terbesar di Indonesia yang telah memberikan banyak kontribusi terhadap perkembangan kajian khazanah naskah Nusantara, khususnya yang bernuansa keagamaan. Melalui kekayaan surau-suraunya yang tersebar di hampir semua pelosok jalur daerah pantai pesisir sampai ke darek atau luhak nan tigo, Minangkabau menyimpan &#8220;harta karun&#8221; berupa naskah-naskah kuno yang tak ternilai.</p>
<p>Para peneliti dan dosen di sejumlah perguruan tinggi di Minangkabau pun, khususnya Universitas Andalas Padang, IAIN Imam Bonjol, dan STAIN Batusangkar, telah sejak lama menjadi aktivis Manassa yang berdiri di garda terdepan menjaga kelestarian khazanah tertulis milik budaya bangsa Indonesia tersebut.</p>
<p>Melalui Kelompok Kajian Poetika Fakultas Sastra Universitas Andalas yang dikomandani Muhammad Yusuf, Adriyetti Amir, Zuriati, Bahren, Pramono, dan sederet pasukan lainnya, sebuah proyek &#8220;Search and Save&#8221; telah lama digulirkan. Tujuannya hanya satu, cari dan selamatkan benda cagar budaya berupa naskah-naskah kuno yang telah menjadi identitas kultural bangsa ini.</p>
<p>Mereka memang tidak pernah disebut sebagai pahlawan, tapi kalau mau jujur, kita, bangsa ini, jelas telah berhutang budi kepada mereka, dan kepada Minangkabau.</p>
<p>Kini, Minangkabau menangis! Kolega-kolega Manassa, yang sebagian besar tinggal di Padang pun turut menjadi bagian dari mereka yang menangis. Sebagian surau yang merupakan skriptorium naskah pun tak luput dari bencana, masyarakat yang selama ini menjadi &#8220;kuncen&#8221; pemeliharaan naskah-naskah kuno warisan leluhur mereka pun kehilangan harta dan sebagian anggota keluarganya, kesulitan berlindung dari hujan dan panas, kekurangan makanan karena tidak ada bahan bakar minyak, bahkan Museum Adityawarman, yang merupakan representasi institusi Negara pemelihara khazanah budaya Minangkabau, juga rusak berat.</p>
<p>Syukur Alhamdulillah, sebagian telah berhasil melakukan kontak dan memberi kabar bahwa mereka &#8220;hanya&#8221; kehilangan rumah tinggalnya, tapi sebagian lagi masih belum berhasil mengetahui nasib anggota keluarganya sendiri.</p>
<p>Demi untuk meringankan beban penderitaan saudara-saudara kita di Minangkabau, Manassa mencoba memberanikan diri membuka saluran bantuan untuk korban bencana alam gempa di Minangkabau. Lagi-lagi kita tersentak! Malaysia mengusik rasa kepemilikan kita atas berbagai khazanah budaya yang sudah kita warisi secara turun temurun, dan kali ini, Tari Pendet Bali yang menjadi pemicunya. Malaysia diyakini telah mengutil tarian itu dalam iklan Visit Year mereka. Meski sudah ada permintaan maaf dari Production House yang membuat iklan <span style="font-style:italic;">Enigmatic Malaysia </span>itu, kita, kawan-kawan di Bali khususnya, terlanjut sakit hati!</p>
<p>Tak urung Menteri Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata, Jero Wacik, yang notabene orang Bali, meradang dibuatnya. Budayawan Mohammad Sobari bahkan menyerukan diambilnya protes keras dan aksi diplomatik nyata oleh Pemerintah RI!</span></p>
<p>Benarkah Malaysia telah mengklaim tarian itu sebagai miliknya? Itu bukan hal yang ingin saya katakan. Biarlah kita tunggu masing-masing pihak berwenang mengklarifikasinya.</p>
<p>Yang ingin saya ingatkan adalah bahwa salah satu akar masalah sesungguhnya ada pada diri kita sendiri sebagai bangsa yang tidak terlalu peduli dengan pemeliharaan aset kebudayaannya. Angklung, Reog Ponorogo, Batik, Hombo Batu, dan Tari Folaya, adalah hanya beberapa ragam budaya yang sering disebut orang telah dikalim oleh Malaysia, tapi orang banyak yang lupa bahwa khazanah budaya dalam bentuk artefak kuno tulisan tangan, atau yang dikenal sebagai naskah-naskah kuno (<span style="font-style:italic;">manuscripts</span>), jauh lebih banyak yang telah berpindah tangan ke Malaysia.<br />
<span id="more-615"></span><br />
Sebagai orang lapangan, saya tahu persis puluhan, dan bahkan mungkin ratusan naskah kuno dari berbagai daerah, seperti Aceh, Minangkabau, Riau, dan wilayah Melayu lainnya, yang telah diborong oleh pembeli ilegal asal Malaysia.</p>
<p>Saya katakan ilegal karena jual beli itu memang terjadi “di bawah tangan”, tidak pernah terang-terangan. Maklum, semua mungkin tahu, menurut UU Cagar Budaya No. 5 1992, naskah kuno termasuk benda yang harus dilindungi dan tidak boleh diperjual belikan, kecuali atas campur tangan Negara. Itu teorinya, Mas!</p>
<p>Mengapa Malaysia begitu kebelet dengan naskah-naskah kuno kita, khususnya yang berbahasa Melayu dan berkaitan dengan Islam, sampai berani membeli naskah-naskah kuno itu seharga ratusan juta rupiah? Mungkin karena artefak semacam itu berkaitan dengan identitas ke-Melayu-an dan ke-Islam-an.</p>
<p>Nama-nama seperti Hamzah Fansuri, Bukhari al-Jawhari, Nuruddin al-Raniri, Syamsuddin al-Sumatra’i, Abdurrauf al-Sinkili, Syaikh Yusuf al-Makassari, Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari, Abdussamad al-Palimbani, Raja Ali Haji, adalah merupakan simbol-simbol kebesaran Melayu Islam masa lalu yang terekam dalam naskah-naskah kuno. Dan, semua nama itu berasal dari wilayah yang kini menjadi bagian dari Indonesia, dan pernah menjadi poros utama peradaban Islam Melayu!</p>
<p>Sekarang, tengoklah Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (PNM) atau Muzeum Islam Malaysia, atau berbagai koleksi pribadi, yang menyimpan puluhan ribu naskah Melayu Nusantara, niscaya nama-nama ulama kita itu akan mendominasi berbagai katalognya. Bagi seorang filolog atau kodikolog, tidak susah juga mengidentifikasi dari mana asal naskah-naskah tersebut karena umumnya <span style="font-style:italic;">kolofon </span>(catatan akhir) di belakang teks menyediakan informasi waktu dan tempat penyalinan serta identitas penyalinnya.</p>
<p>Tentu saya tidak ingin mengatakan bahwa semua naskah-naskah itu diperoleh secara ilegal, tapi berbagai kasus di lapangan membuat saya miris. Masyarakat kita sering “tidak kuat iman” melihat gepokan ratus juta rupiah untuk ditukar dengan naskah-nakah kuno miliknya!</p>
<p>Tapi apa daya? Mereka dibiarkan oleh Negara untuk merawat sendirian warisan nenek moyangnya itu, padahal perut mereka sering kelaparan. Giliran diusik, meradanglah kita ramai-ramai!</p>
<p>Dalam hal ini, Malaysia jelas sangat ingin menjadi pusat bagi peradaban Melayu Islam di wilayah Asia Tenggara. Tentu tidak salah! Masalahnya Malaysia memang tidak memiliki khazanah naskah Melayu sekaya kita, sama halnya dengan kenyataan bahwa Malaysia mungkin tidak memiliki tarian seindah Tari Pendet, sehingga perlu “meminjamnya” dari Bali untuk promosi wisatanya.</p>
<p>Celakanya, kita sebagai “pemilik sah” berbagai kebudayaan Melayu itu, bermimpi pun mungkin tidak pernah untuk menjadi pusat peradaban Melayu!</p>
<p>Sebagai peneliti, saya dan kawan-kawan di Kampus sering menggerutu saat sumber primer lokal yang sangat dibutuhkan tidak bisa dijumpai satu pun di Negeri sendiri, kecuali di Negeri orang.</p>
<p>Kitab hadis Melayu pertama, yang berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">al-Fawa&#8217;id al-bahiyah fi al-ahadith al-nabawiyah</span> karangan Nuruddin al-Raniri (w.1658) misalnya, sejauh ini tidak satu pun dijumpai di perpustakaan-perpustakaan Negeri ini. Hanya ada satu di PNM Kuala Lumpur, tercatat dengan kode MS 1042! Padahal, kitab yang memuat 831 buah hadis sahih itu merupakan salah satu sumber primer pertama di bidang hadis dalam konteks sejarah Islam Melayu. Ah, siapa peduli?</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Ketidakpedulian Kita</span><br />
Mari coba bertanya, sejauh mana upaya yang sudah kita lakukan untuk melestarikan khazanah kebudayaan itu? Seperti yang Budayawan Radhar Panca Dahana katakan, tidak banyak! Kita lebih sering merasa kebakaran jenggot saat orang lain dirasa mengusik “milik” kita. Kalau tidak, kita cuek-cuek saja. “Hanya peduli pada olahraga dan program lainnya,” katanya.</p>
<p>Seiring perkembangan teknologi digital ini misalnya, salah satu trend pelestarian naskah-naskah kuno adalah melalui program digitalisasi. Sejak 2006, The Brisith Library secara rutin mendanai sejumlah program digitalisasi naskah kuno koleksi Masyarakat di Surabaya (Ahyad 2006), Kerinci (Kozok 2007), Riau (Putten 2007), Minangkabau (Zuriati 2007, Katkova 2008), Aceh (Fakhriati 2008), Buton (Suryadi 2008), Garut (Acri 2009).</p>
<p>Pun demikian dengan Leipzig University. Sejak 2007 lalu, Universitas di Jerman ini telah melakukan program restorasi dan digitalisasi naskah-naskah di Museum Aceh, Yayasan Ali Hasjmy, dan sejumlah koleksi masyarakat, bekerja sama dengan Pusat Kajian Pendidikan dan Masyarakat (PKPM).</p>
<p>Sudah ribuan naskah yang berhasil diselamatkan, setidaknya teks-teks digitalnya, dan tentu saja, sudah puluhan ribu halaman naskah yang ditambahkan pada koleksi perpustakaan asing semisal The British Library, tapi tidak selalu menjadi tambahan koleksi Perpustakaan Nasional, karena institusi yang mewakili Negara ini tidak terlibat, bahkan tahu ada program-program itu pun seringkali tidak!</p>
<p>Masih mending ada Puslitbang Lektur Keagamaan, Departemen Agama, yang kini banyak mengagendakan kegiatannya di bidang pelestarian naskah-naskah Nusantara, khususnya yang bernuansa keagamaan. Mestinya bukan Departemen Agama, toh? Seharusnya Departemen Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata, atau Perpustakaan Nasional, menjadi lembaga Negara terdepan yang menaungi kita semua.</p>
<p>Jadi, layakkah kita merasa memiliki, jika kita belum berfikir maksimal menjaganya?</p>

IS the saliva of dogs unclean? Is contact with dogs defiling and, accordingly, prohibited among Muslims, especially of the Shafi’i school? Controversy over this question split the Kelantan royal family in the late 1930s and divided Kelantanese society, from top to bottom, between religious modernists and traditionalists.<br />
<span id="more-614"></span><br />
After heated disagreement and an impressive and well-attended majlis muzakarah (formal public debate), the question was eventually referred to the very highest of authorities, Sheikh-ul-Islam at Al-Azhar in Cairo, for authoritative adjudication.</span></p>
<p>This dramatic confrontation is the subject of one of 15 essays by William R. Roff that were originally published between 1964 and 2007; the essays have been collected in a handsomely-produced book that was launched at Universiti Malaya on Thursday.</p>
<p>The front dust jacket of this notable collection of essays by the preeminent historian of 20th century Peninsular Malay society is telling. It is emblazoned with a picture of the Raja Muda of Kelantan’s splendid Dalmatian hound seated obediently beside the leading Islamic modernist Haji Abbas Taha who was prominently involved in the debate.</p>
<p>(The rear cover offers a picture of Roff in Malay kampung company at the outset of his distinguished research career in this country in 1959.)</p>
<p>The specifically focused but substantial essays brought together in this new book, published by Singapore’s NUS Press, are companion pieces to Roff’s great masterpiece, The Origins of Malay Nationalism (Yale University Press), long recognised internationally as the single most important book for the understanding of modern Peninsular Malay history and contemporary Malaysian society.</p>
<p>These essays range across a variety of different but intimately interconnected themes and topics. Their subjects cover the richly cosmopolitan Muslim world of late 19th century Singapore and the role of Muslims of Arab Hadrami (from the Hadramaut region in the Middle East) origins in Malay cultural, intellectual, and journalistic life, and the modern Malay cultural renaissance.</p>
<p>The essays explore the experiences of Malay and Indonesian students in Cairo in the 1920s, in a time of anticolonial ferment and exciting religious polemics, and their subsequent religious role and political influence in this region.</p>
<p>The essays also trace the sources and pathways of some key long-term processes of Malaysia’s more recent Islamisation initiatives.</p>
<p>They reveal some changing patterns yet underlying continuities: in the “production” and recognition, or social authentication, of religious scholars (ulama); in the publication and diffusion of ideas of correct Islamic doctrine and action; and in the management and supervision, including political policing, of the haj (the pilgrimage to Mecca that is one of Islam’s cardinal obligations).</p>
<p>Above all, these essays highlight the fundamental importance of two powerful dynamics in the strengthening of Malay, and Malaysian, Islam.</p>
<p>The first has been the centralisation and streamlining, under modern bureaucracies, of the management and everyday administration of Malay religious life. The second has been recourse to derivatively modern Western procedures for the enactment of statute law, and the issuing of related government regulations, to promote orthodox views of correct Islamic practice and to expand the social reach of those eager that such views be made to prevail.</p>
<p>Together these measures have been crucial in the rectification and consolidation of officially desirable Islamic practices, and in entrenching the power and position of their duly appointed custodians.</p>
<p>Other essays probe such subjects as the nature of Islamic social movements and their driving ideas; the interplay, as understood or misunderstood by the great Dutch historians of a century ago, between adat and hukum (between local Malay custom and Islamic Syariah law); Islamic naming practices and what they may reveal about the long-term processes of the Islamisation of society and culture; and the beginnings of modern Malay popular and didactic literature in the translation and publication in the 1920s of a Nick Carter-type detective story.</p>
<p>Among these 15 essays, some will be of special appeal and interest to many readers here in Malaysia – and not just those from the scholarly community, either.</p>
<p>One essay stands out especially. It probes an intriguing story, the notoriously unsolved murder of a prominent Hadrami Arab, Syed Abdul Kadir Alsagoff, in Singapore in 1908. Was the reason business rivalry, personal jealousy, doctrinal disagreement over the propriety of marriages on a basis of equality between higher- and lower-ranked Hadrami Arabs?</p>
<p>The truth of the matter? We will never know. We may now only wonder and speculate. As Roff wisely concludes, Wa Allahu’alam &#8230; God alone knows.</p>
<p>History, among its best observers and recorders, is not about definitive answers but about good questions and perennial issues. The Alsagoff murder is such a question. The various issues that Roff opens up to his readers in these essays are issues of continuing significance. And Roff does them justice. He has written a book that is as readable and engaging as it is important.</p>

<p>Within the last two decades, there have been increasingly growing activities, including preservation, cataloguing, digitizing, and research of Indonesian manuscripts. Both national and international institutions dedicating to this field apparently strive themselves to lead and to gain access to the Indonesian manuscripts.</p>
<p>In the end of 1990s, the Ford Foundation is certainly considered as a leading international funding agency greatly contributing to the preservation of Indonesian manuscripts mainly through microfilm and microfiche projects and scholarship.</p>
<p>Since the early 2000s, a Japanese agency, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) represented by the Center for Documentation of Area-Trans Cultural Studies (C-DATS), and supported by the Toyota Foundation, has involved in the digitizing and cataloguing projects of Indonesian manuscripts kept in such areas as Palembang (Ikram [ed.] 2004), Minangkabau (Yusuf [ed.] 2006), and Aceh (Fathurahman &amp; Holil 2007). Their publications have undoubtedly a great contribution to the increasing research interests in the study of the local historical documents among Indonesian researchers and students. Prof. Dr. Toru Aoyama, Prof. Dr. Koji Miyazaki, Dr. Yumi Sugahara, and Dr. Kazuhiro Arai are among them who have dedicated his academic activities for the Project.<br />
<span id="more-613"></span><br />
Since the early 2008, Leipzig University &#8211;collaborating with such institutions as Aceh State Museum, Ali Hasjmy Foundation, Research Centre for Education and Society (PKPM), and <a href="http://manassa.org/">the Indonesian Association for Nusantara Manuscripts (Manassa)</a>&#8211; has conducted the digitising project and the development of <a href="http://acehms.dl.uni-leipzig.de/content/below/index.xml?XSL.lastPage.SESSION=/content/below/index.xml">online digital library</a> of Indonesian, particularly the Acehnese, manuscripts. We have to thank to Dr. Thoralf Hanstein for his full support of this Project.</span></p>
<p>Ecole Française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in Jakarta, especially thanks to my respected teacher, Prof. Dr. Henri Chambert-Loir, also plays a vital role in facilitating the publication of research products on Indonesian manuscripts. Likewise, all of them have greatly motivated many researchers to do more research and to make old-local documents easily accessible to the public, an easy open access which is previously very difficult to find.</p>
<p>Considering the characteristics of Indonesian manuscripts, which are greatly influenced by Islam, the manuscripts studies have positively affected the development and trends of Indonesian Islamic studies. Previously, many researchers on Indonesian Islam merely relied on foreign ethnographies (Middle East and West/Europe). But now, they have other alternative sources which are even more authentic, important, and mostly untouchable.</p>
<p>What encouraging is the fact that some state institutions responsible for Islamic studies and religious affairs have recently made important initiatives. The Center for Research and Development of Religious Literatures (Puslitbang Lektur Keagamaan), Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA), for instance, is now standing on the top position in conducting variety of projects related to Indonesian manuscripts, including workshops, trainings, manuscripts inventory, research, etc. Prof. Dr. Atho Mudzhar and Prof. Dr. Maidir Harun are the key persons, who are responsible for this fascinating support.</p>
<p>It is also the case with higher Islamic education systems, including State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Previously, we found the growing trend of research on Islam in global and contemporary issues. But now, there is an increasing number of academic works, in the forms of BA, MA, and Ph.D. theses, on local Islam, using manuscripts as primary sources. Moreover, UIN Syarif  Hidayatullah Jakarta plans to open graduate studies of Indonesian Islamic philological studies.</p>
<p>Here, however, a big problem emerges. Imagine that large number of manuscript researchers entering a very rich “virgin forest” are lost due to its poor inventory management. Compared to the Middle East Islamic area studies &#8211;much older, where the existence of works such as <span style="font-style:italic;">ṭabaqāt</span>, <span style="font-style:italic;">fah</span><span class="fullpost" style="font-style:italic;">ā</span><span class="fullpost"><span style="font-style:italic;">ris</span> and <span style="font-style:italic;">maʻājim</span> have been extremely helpful in identifying books, authors, names of place, etc.&#8211; the Southeast Asian studies is a nightmare.</span><span class="fullpost"> One can possibly spend weeks to find a clue of something mentioned in a manuscript with no success. This of course discourages researchers and students to go into Indonesian Islamic manuscripts.</span></p>
<p>Another problem is that up to now there is no comprehensive work considered as authoritative reference on any Indonesian Islamic manuscripts which have been, or being, studied by any scholars in any forms, both academic and non-academic. Accordingly, there has been no cross communication among researchers in the field. Sometimes it happens that two researchers working on the same manuscript without knowing each other.</p>
<p>The above problem certainly needs some solutions, one of which is making a database, which not only identifies all Indonesian Islamic texts produced since the 16th century, but also provides their author names, languages, scripts, places of collection, related catalogues, and relevant researches done so far. Hence, such a database would be certainly very useful for philologists, historians, and researchers in the field of Indonesian Islamic studies.</p>
<p>To make it more useful for broader academic communities, the database will be available in English version and called Thesaurus of Indonesian Islamic Manuscripts (T2IM). Although it uses the term “Indonesian”, the database includes not only Indonesian Islamic manuscripts but also Southeast Asian region (Nusantara) covering the areas of Pattani in South Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, and others. The word “Indonesian” is chosen on the ground that most of the manuscripts are actually produced in, and come from, Indonesia albeit the copies are now kept in diverse institutions and libraries abroad.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">Thesaurus of Indonesian Islamic Manuscripts (T2IM)</span><br />
Religious manuscripts [read: Islamic] constitute the major categories of the Indonesian manuscripts. Based on all catalogues compiled and researches conducted, Islamic manuscripts are very significance in number, containing the history of Southeast Asian Islam, including biographies of ulamas and/or prolific authors of religious texts in their lifetime periods.</p>
<p>These manuscripts are predominantly categorized as—using Braginsky’s words (1998: 275-276)—“Sastra Kitab,” religious texts which can be classified into Qur’anic exegesis (<span style="font-style:italic;">tafsīr</span>), prophetic tradition (<span style="font-style:italic;">ḥadīth</span>), Islamic jurisprudence (<span style="font-style:italic;">fiqh</span>), sufism, theology, etc.</p>
<p>The T2IM is a database designed by the Center for Research and Development of Religious Literatures (Puslitbang Lektur Keagamaan), Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA), and <span class="fullpost">the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM), Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN)</span><span class="fullpost"> Jakarta. In its development, the T2IM get supports from experts and researchers specializing in Indonesian manuscripts officially affiliated with <a href="http://manassa.org/">the Indonesian Association for Nusantara Manuscripts or MANASSA</a>.</span></p>
<p>The T2IM is mainly intended to provide information for both public and academic community on Indonesian Islamic manuscripts as complete as possible, written both in Arabic and local languages like Acehnese, Buginese, Javanase, Madurese, Malay, Minangkabau, Sasak, Sundanese, Wolio and others used in a written literary tradition in Indonesia. The T2IM also provides some other useful information like the author names with their biographical accounts, number of copies kept in all libraries around the world, catalogues that list the related manuscripts including their pages and summaries, and all the articles and books about them.</p>
<p>The T2IM will show an even greater importance with the availability of information about the conducted, as well as the ongoing, philological works. If possible, these works are digitally available and could be downloaded. It is hoped that not only can it avoid unnecessary repetition in studying these texts but also fill the gaps found in the previous studies.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Significance of T2IM in the Development of Intellectual Islamic Tradition in Southeast Asia</span><br />
Southeast Asian Islamic Studies is certainly a very interesting and of course important field of study especially due to the large number of Moslems living in the region. To some extent, however, Islam in Southeast Asia is still considered as peripheral because it is very much different from Islam in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa and Iran.</p>
<p>Referring to the existing databases for Islamic world, one is impressed that Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia are not yet considered as one of important Islamic regions in the world. In fact, rarely known is the fact that Southeast Asian Muslims inherited such a great writing tradition established since the 17th century that the region is called the cradle of Islam. The written treasury made by the ulamas and Muslim authors in the past are undoubtedly strong evident that Southeast Asia can definitely be considered as one of world centers for Islamic studies.</p>
<p>There are some factors that make Southeast Asian Islam less important in global Islamic discourse. Firstly, there is a dichotomy between central Islam developed in the Arab world and peripheral Islam which is frequently considered as pseudo Islam. Secondly, Southeast Asian Muslims have not much explored and provided information about their intensive research to the international community, without which Southeast Asian Islam would not be fully understood.</p>
<p>Some other factors of course might also be blamed as being responsible for discouraging scholars to study Southeast Asian intellectual heritage. But one thing is clear, there is no satisfactory research instrument available for scholars and researchers to go further to the realm of Indonesian religious manuscripts, the complicated and not stimulating realm.</p>
<p>From this perspective, the T2IM database will play an important role. The T2IM would be certainly a vital source for philologists, historians, and scholars of Southeast Asian Islamic Studies who are keen to see the characteristics of local Islam through the exploration of ulamas’ works in the past. It is due to the fact that T2IM provides related information, as complete as possible, about the existence of Indonesian religious manuscripts that it serves as a “gateway” for all scholars of Southeast Asian Islamic Studies before an actual research is started. The T2IM is not merely a catalogue. It constitutes a catalogue of catalogues of Indonesian Islamic manuscripts in a recent form, which is an open-access for the public anytime and anywhere.</p>
<p>Considering a huge number of Indonesian Islamic manuscripts kept around the world, mounting to hundred thousand manuscripts or even more, as it is thought, the T2IM is definitely a lifetime project in which all data will be continuously revised and completed in accordance with the research findings in the future.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;">The Logics and Organization of T2IM</span><br />
As stated above, one of the main objectives of T2IM is to provide information and data as complete as possible concerning Indonesian religious manuscripts. In order to achieve this target, T2IM needs to be systematically improved.</p>
<p>Until now, Indonesian manuscripts are by and large kept in both private collections and public institutions including libraries, museums, and foundations, both in Indonesia and foreign countries. Some manuscripts collections have been catalogued. Yet, most of them have not.</p>
<p>In the initial establishment, the T2IM would be drawn upon printed catalogues as well as other manuscripts lists and documentations. All publications containing the lists of Indonesian religious manuscripts, whether they provide complete information or titles only, would be read and further developed and included in the T2IM database.</p>
<p>In this regard, the work entitled <span style="font-style:italic;">Khazanah Naskah: Panduan Koleksi Naskah- Indonesia Sedunia (World Guide to Indonesian Manuscript Collections)</span> by Henri Chambert-Loir and Oman Fathurahman (1999) would be the first important reference since it is considered as the most recent catalogue of catalogues of Indonesian manuscripts ever compiled up to the present. Using this work, hundreds of manuscripts catalogues as well as manuscripts lists and documentations written since the 19th century can be easily traced.</p>
<p>It should be noted that after the publication of <span style="font-style:italic;">Khazanah Naskah</span>, we still find a number of catalogues of Indonesian manuscripts kept in some collections, such as <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog Naskah Buton Koleksi Abdul Mulku Zahari</span> (Catalogue of Buton Manuscripts collected by Abdul Mulku Zahari) by Achadiati Ikram, et.al. (2002), <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog Naskah Palembang </span>(Catalogue of Palembang Manuscripts) by Achadiati Ikram, (ed.) (2004), <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog Naskah-naskah Perpustakaan Pura Pakualaman </span>(Catalogue of Pakualaman Manuscript Library) by Sri Ratna Saktimulya (ed.) (2005), <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalogus Manuskrip dan Skriptorium Minangkabau </span>(Catalogue of Minangkabau Manuscripts and Scriptorium) by M. Yusuf (ed.) (2006), <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog Naskah Ali Hasjmy Aceh (</span>Catalogue of Aceh Manuscripts: Ali Hasjmy Collection) by Oman Fathurahman and Munawar Holil (eds.) (2007), <span style="font-style:italic;">Catalogue of Malay and Minangkabau Manuscripts in the Library of Leidein University and other collections in the Netherlands</span>. <span style="font-style:italic;">Volume Two, comprising the H.N. van der Tuuk bequest acquired by the Leiden University in 1896 </span>by Edwin Wieringa (2007), <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog naskah: Koleksi Masyarakat Keturunan Indonesia di Afrika Selatan </span>(Catalogue of Manuscripts collected by the Indonesian Descendents in South Africa) by Ahmad Rahman and Syahrial (2008), and <span style="font-style:italic;">Katalog Naskah Tanoh Abee Aceh Besar</span> (Catalogue of Tanoh Abee Manuscripts in Aceh Besar)  (forthcoming in 2010). All these new catalogues can be definitely used as authoritative and therefore important references for the making of T2IM.</p>
<p>The T2IM project will also trace academic works using Indonesian Islamic manuscripts as primary sources. The project will give the priority to the academic works, including B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. theses and other works using philological approach or philological research using interdisciplinary approaches. All these findings would be included in the description section of the related texts in the T2IM database. For this reason, all libraries in all Indonesian universities in particular, and around the world in general, would be certainly the main targeted locations for this tracing effort. Apart from this, the project will trace them through the publication of both national and international journals on related subjects.</p>
<p>A number of researches have identified the existence of Indonesian Islamic manuscripts in private collections. If possible, all information concerning the manuscripts kept in such collection would also be included in the T2IM database. In the long run their existence cannot be guaranteed since, badly kept, they are vulnerable to theft, lose or even destruction.</p>
<p>Last but not least, all these collected data will be an online database using well-designed software through which anyone will be able to access anytime and anywhere. It&#8217;s expected that T2IM will be accessible for a public on early next year. So, please keep contact with us.</p>

Kini, semua persiapan tampaknya telah selesai dilakukan, dan jadwal serta pembicara selengkapnya pun telah dipublikasikan (silahkan klik <a href="http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/conferences/ConferenceProgramme2.html#top">di sini</a>).</p>
<p>Bagi dunia pernaskahan Nusantara, forum-forum internasional semacam TIMA ini sesungguhnya sangat penting untuk dicermati, syukur-syukur jika bisa selalu berpartisipasi di dalamnya, karena pengaruh ke-Islam-an dalam naskah-naskah Nusantara jelas sangat besar, dan jumlah naskah kategori keagamaan Islam pun sangat signifikan, sehingga topik-topik yang ditawarkan niscaya akan sering bersinggungan dengan dunia pernaskahan kita.</p>
<p>Penting, karena melalui forum semacam TIMA ini, kita bisa menempatkan kekayaan khazanah pernaskahan kita dalam konteks yang lebih besar, tidak sekedar dunia Islam Melayu-Indonesia atau Nusantara, melainkan, lebih dari itu, dunia Islam secara keseluruhan. Bukan rahasia lagi bahwa para penulis naskah ke-Islam-an Nusantara jelas sangat terpengaruh oleh para ulama dan penulis yang berasal dari dunia Islam lainnya, baik menyangkut substansi maupun bahasanya.<br />

Dengan semakin terbukanya informasi tentang khazanah naskah Nusantara, dalam hal ini naskah ke-Islam-annya yang ditulis oleh para penulis dan ulama lokal, ke dunia luar, maka akan semakin terbuka pula mata dunia bahwa, sejauh menyangkut tradisi intelektualnya, Islam Indonesia tidak sekedar menjadi konsumen saja, melainkan juga telah berperan sebagai produsen, bahkan sejak abad 16 lalu. Hal ini penting ditegaskan mengingat bahwa selama ini, Islam Indonesia, atau lebih jauh Asia Tenggara, masih sering dianggap sebagai pinggiran  (<span style="font-style:italic;">peripheral</span>) dan bertindak sebagai konsumen saja, berbeda dari Islam yang ada di Timur Tengah, khususnya Makkah dan Madinah, yang dianggap sebagai pusatnya (<span style="font-style:italic;">center</span>) yang telah memproduksi khazanah keilmuan Islam dalam skala besar.</span></p>
<p>Beruntung bahwa dalam konferensi kelima TIMA yang bertemakan &#8220;Access and Right&#8221; ini, saya berkesempatan menjadi salah seorang yang diundang sebagai pemrasaran, salah satu dari tiga pemrasaran asal Asia Tenggara (2 lainnya dari Malaysia), atau satu-satunya perwakilan dari Indonesia.</p>
<p>Melalui paper saya berjudul &#8220;Thesaurus of Indonesian Islamic Manuscripts (T2IM): An Effort to Develop A Comprehensive Database for Academic Purposes&#8221;, saya ingin menunjukkan kepada dunia betapa tradisi intelektual Islam Indonesia masa lalu, sesungguhnya tidak kalah penting dari wilayah Islam lain selain Makkah dan Madinah, seperti Afrika, Asia Selatan, Turki, dan lainnya.</p>
<p>Paper ini akan menjelaskan soal Program penyusunan database naskah Islam Indonesia yang sedang dikembangkan oleh Pusat Pengkajian Islam dan Masyarakat (PPIM) dan Puslitbang Lektur Keagamaan, Badan Litbang dan Diklat, Departemen Agama RI, bekerja sama dengan Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (Manassa).</p>
<p>Kelak, database, yang lebih praktis disebut T2IM ini, akan mendaftarkan semua judul naskah Islam Nusantara yang pernah diketahui keberadaannya di dalam dan di luar Negeri, di lembaga maupun di masyarakat, baik fisik naskahnya masih ada atau sudah lenyap, serta dilengkapi dengan informasi kodikologis tentang pengarang, bahasa, aksara, kategori keilmuan, lembaga yang menyimpan, katalog yang menyebut, dan hasil-hasil penelitian yang pernah dilakukan atasnya, baik oleh penulis lokal maupun asing, dll.</p>
<p>Saya berharap bahwa suatu saat dunia akademik, khususnya para pengkaji Islam Nusantara, baik filologis, sejarawan, antropolog, sosiolog, atau lainnya, akan menjadikan T2IM ini sebagai sumber rujukan utama dalam aktivitas penelitiannya. Apalagi, database ini akan terus menerus diperbaharui dari waktu ke waktu, dan akan senantiasa mendaftarkan hasil-hasil penelitian sekecil apapun tingkatannya, sehingga tidak akan ada lagi tumpang tindih penelitian, karena semua hasil penelitian yang pernah dilakukan atas sebuah naskah akan dapat diketahui melalui T2IM ini.</p>
<p>Nah, jadi, jika anda merasa pernah menulis sebuah karya yang mendasarkan pada naskah-naskah Islam Nusantara, khususnya jika terbit dalam skala terbatas, atau tidak pernah terbit sama sekali, silahkan informasikan kepada kami untuk didaftarkan, dan agar diketahui oleh khalayak banyak, siapa tahu kami belum mengetahuinya.</p>
<p>Akhirnya, saya berjanji untuk berbagi kembali setelah selesai mengikuti konferensi TIMA tersebut, siapa tahu ada sejumlah makalah yang bermanfaat buat kita semua. Salam</p>

<p>Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang pernah dilakukan, diketahui bahwa naskah-naskah tertulis (manuscripts) Nusantara terdapat dalam jumlah yang sangat besar, mencapai angka puluhan ribu, baik yang tersimpan di dalam maupun di luar negeri. Naskah-naskah tersebut ditulis dalam berbagai bahasa, seperti Arab, Melayu, Jawa, Sunda, Sasak, Bali, Wolio, dan lain-lain.<br />

Mengingat bahan kertasnya yang rentan, dan usianya yang telah mencapai ratusan tahun, maka pada umumnya kondisi fisik naskah-naskah tersebut sangat mengkhawatirkan, sehingga jika tidak segera dilakukan upaya-upaya pemeliharaan (preservasi), bukan tidak mungkin kalau suatu saat naskah-naskah berserta kandungan pengetahuan yang terdapat di dalamnya itu hilang dimakan zaman.</span></p>
<p>Pemeliharaan naskah sendiri dapat dikategorikan menjadi dua jenis: pertama, pemeliharaan fisik naskahnya; dan kedua, pemeliharaan teks-teks yang terdapat di dalamnya. Jenis pemeliharaan model pertama dapat dilakukan melalui restorasi, yakni merawat dan mengembalikan keutuhan kertas dan jilidannya sehingga diharapkan bisa bertahan lebih lama.</p>
<p>Adapun jenis pemeliharaan kedua adalah berupaya melestarikan teks-teks yang terkandung di dalamnya melalui pembuatan salinan (backup) dalam media lain, sehingga paling tidak kandungan isi khazanah naskah itu tetap dapat dilestarikan meskipun seandainya fisik naskahnya musnah akibat rusak atau bencana.</p>
<p>Pada masa lalu, hingga tahun 80-an, pembuatan salinan teks-teks tersebut dilakukan melalui teknologi mikrofilm. Akan tetapi, saat ini, teknologi tersebut jelas sudah tidak tepat lagi digunakan. Bahkan, teknologi mikrofilm terbukti telah tidak efisien lagi dalam hal pemanfaatannya oleh para pembaca.</p>
<p>Kini, pilihan yang paling mungkin adalah memanfaatkan teknologi digital, baik dalam bentuk kamera maupun mesin scanner. Melalui teknologi digitalisasi ini, kandungan isi puluhan ribu naskah akan dapat dibuatkan salinannya, sebagai cadangan jika naskah aslinya sudah tidak dapat dipergunakan lagi.</p>
<p>Yang menjadi tantangan adalah belum banyak tersedianya tenaga-tenaga yang memiliki keterampilan melakukan digitalisasi naskah secara profesional, dan sekaligus mengelolanya dalam sebuah portal naskah Nusantara, padahal, jika portal naskah Nusantara tersebut bisa terwujud, maka akan banyak pihak-pihak yang dapat merasakan manfaatnya untuk berbagai penelitian, termasuk penelitian masalah-masalah keagamaan.</p>
<p>Untuk itulah, Puslitbang Lektur Keagamaan, Depag RI, bekerja sama dengan Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (Manassa), berinisiatif menyelenggarakan kegiatan Pelatihan Digitalisasi Naskah dan Pengembangan Portal Naskah Nusantara. Dalam pelaksanaan program ini, Manassa Pusat melibatkan  teman-teman dari Manassa Cabang Solo.</p>
<p>Tujuan</p>
<p>Secara umum, pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk:</p>
<p>a. Mensosialisasikan pentingnya pemeliharaan naskah-naskah tertulis (manuscritps) Nusantara;</p>
<p>b. Memperluas wawasan pengetahuan tentang digitalisasi naskah dan pengembangan perpustakaan digital.</p>
<p>Adapun tujuan khusus yang ingin dicapai adalah:</p>
<p>a. Melatih peserta agar memiliki keterampilan praktik digitalisasi naskah tulisan tangan (manuscripts) Nusantara;</p>
<p>b. Melatih peserta agar mampu mengelola teks-teks digital menjadi sebuah koleksi perpustakaan naskah digital yang bersifat online.</p>
<p>Sebagai bagian dari upaya mencapai tujuan di atas, Pelatihan ini juga akan mensosialisasikan sebuah open source software untuk mengelola portal naskah Nusantara, yang disiapkan oleh tim ahli dari Leipzig University.</p>
<p>Waktu dan Tempat Kegiatan</p>
<p>Pelatihan ini akan diselenggarakan pada tanggal 24-27 Juni 2009 di Hotel Sahid Jaya, Solo.</p>
<p>Narasumber</p>
<p>Narasumber Pelatihan ini melibatkan para praktisi di bidang digitalisasi naskah, dari luar negeri, yakni: Dr. Thoralf Hanstein (Kepala Program digitalisasi Naskah Nusantara, Leipzig University); Ir. Jens Kupferschmidt (Ahli Informatika dan Komputer, Leipzig University); Joerg Graf (Ahli Restorasi, Leipzig University); Johns Paterson (Konsultan digitalisasi naskah Jawa) di Yayasan Sastra Solo); dan para pakar pernaskahan dari dalam negeri.</p>
<p>Kriteria Peserta</p>
<p>Peserta  Pelatihan ini berasal dari berbagai daerah yang dipilih berdasarkan sejumlah kriteria yang ditentukan, yaitu:</p>
<p>a. Memiliki pengetahuan dasar tentang khazanah naskah Nusantara;</p>
<p>b. Memiliki pengetahuan dasar teknologi fotografi dan internet;</p>
<p>c. Memiliki akses yang baik terhadap koleksi naskah di daerah asalnya, baik koleksi pribadi maupun koleksi lembaga;</p>
<p>d. Memiliki visi untuk mengembangkan perpustakaan digital naskah Nusantara;</p>
<p>e. Diutamakan telah, sedang, atau berencana menyelenggarakan program digitalisasi naskah di daerah asalnya;</p>
<p>Target dan Sasaran</p>
<p>Target utama Kegiatan Pelatihan ini, antara lain, adalah:</p>
<p>a. Terhimpunnya sejumlah peserta yang memiliki wawasan dan keterampilan tentang tata cara digitalisasi naskah yang berstandar internasional;</p>
<p>b. Terhimpunnya sejumlah peserta yang mampu menjalankan program pengembangan perpustakaan naskah digital;</p>
<p>c. Terkoordinasinya kegiatan digitalisasi naskah Nusantara melalui Portal Naskah Nusantara yang akan dikelola oleh Manassa.</p>
<p>Mudah-mudahan kegiatan ini bisa berlangsung dengan lancar dan sukses sehingga bisa melahirkan tenaga-tenaga terampil sekaligus profesional dalam bidang digitalisasi naskah dan pengelolaan portal naskah Nusantara. Harapannya, di masa depan naskah-naskah Nusantara bisa terselamatkan dan para peneliti naskah Nusantara bisa dengan mudah mengakses dengan mudah bahan-bahan penelitiannya yang berupa naskah.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><br /><p><a href="http://www.princeton.edu/main/news/archive/S23/71/54K21/index.xml?sectio"><img src="http://naskahkuno.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/princeton.jpg?w=300" border="0" alt="" /></a>Princeton University has placed a new digital library of 200 Islamic manuscripts online for scholars to consult and study.</p>
<p>These manuscripts were selected from some 9,500 volumes of Islamic manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and other languages of the Muslim world in the University Library&#8217;s Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Princeton&#8217;s extraordinary holdings constitute the premier collection in the Western Hemisphere and among the finest in the world, according to Don Skemer, curator of manuscripts.<br />
<span id="more-607"></span><br />
The digital library is a major component of the Islamic Manuscripts Cataloging and Digitization Project, begun in 2005 with the generous support of the David A. Gardner &#8216;69 Magic Project. Eventually, all of the manuscripts will be cataloged online, which involves creating bibliographic records containing basic descriptive information that helps researchers decide whether to order microform copies or to visit the library in person.</span></p>
<p>&#8220;The Islamic Manuscripts Cataloging and Digitization Project was conceived specifically as a way for the library to improve access to these rich collections and share them worldwide through digital technology,&#8221; Skemer said. &#8220;It is hoped that the project will make a contribution to international understanding and serve as a gesture of good will to a critical part of the world.&#8221;</p>
<p>Michael Cook, the Class of 1943 University Professor of Near Eastern Studies and one of the leading Islamicists in America, said, &#8220;Princeton has 9,500 Islamic manuscripts in Arabic and other languages in a location that is very convenient for scholars based in North America, but far less so for those based in the Islamic world or Europe. Most of the collection is described in printed catalogs, and scholars can always obtain microfilms of the manuscripts. But the printed catalogs are old and not available everywhere, while microfilms often provide images of poor quality. The online digital library thus marks a major advance in providing up-to-date descriptions of the manuscripts to anyone who can log onto the Web, and in making at least some of the manuscripts available online in fine-quality digital images.&#8221;</p>
<p>The digital library includes this Arabic botanical manuscript from the 15th century that is from the Robert Garrett Collection donated to the University in 1942.</p>
<p>Approximately two-thirds of the manuscripts were donated to the University in 1942 by Robert Garrett, a member of Princeton&#8217;s class of 1897. But the library has continued to build this collection since then.</p>
<p>The digitized manuscripts date from the early centuries of Islam until the fall of the Ottoman Empire. They originated in all parts of the Islamic world, from Moorish Spain and northern Africa in the West, through the Middle East, and to India and Indonesia in the East. Subject coverage is fairly encyclopedic, including history, biography, philosophy and logic, theology (based both on the Quran and tradition), law and jurisprudence, language, literature, book arts and illustration, magic and occult sciences, astrology, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and other aspects of the spiritual and intellectual life of the Islamic world.</p>
<p>While the digital library emphasizes rare or unique texts of academic research interest, it also includes a selection of Persian illuminated manuscripts and Mughal miniatures, such as a magnificent 18th-century Indian album of miniatures and calligraphy.</p>
<p>Princeton expects to add more manuscripts to the digital library in the future, besides producing the online bibliographic descriptions.</p>

Kini, manuskrip-manuskrip tersebut dijumpai, dan tersebar di berbagai belahan dunia, tidak hanya di wilayah-wilayah yang pada masanya merupakan pusat peradaban Islam, melainkan juga di negara-negara lain yang tidak pernah menjadi pusat keislaman, tetapi saat ini secara akademis memberikan perhatian besar terhadap tradisi pernaskahan Islam itu sendiri.</p>
<p>Eropa adalah salah satu wilayah yang memiliki tradisi akademis sedemikian kuat di bidang teks dan pernaskahan keislaman. Sejumlah universitas dan perpustakaan di Eropa, sebut saja misalnya Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Leipzig University Library, dan Leiden University Library, dikenal sebagai gudang penyimpan naskah-naskah Islam (<span style="font-style:italic;">Islamic manuscripts</span>) berbahasa Arab, Persia, dan Turki, yang berasal dari periode Islam awal, dan termasuk di antaranya naskah-naskah keislaman Nusantara dalam bahasa-bahasa lokal, seperti Jawa dan Melayu.<br /><span class="fullpost"><br />Sarjana-sarjana Eropa khususnya, sadar betapa naskah-naskah Islam tersebut memiliki posisi signifikan sebagai bukti tertulis otentik berkaitan dengan sejarah peradaban Islam masa lalu. Karenanya, tidak sedikit sarjana Eropa yang meletakkan dasar-dasar kesarjanaannya pada manuskrip-manuskrip Islam, termasuk yang berasal dari Nusantara. Berbagai kajian terhadap aspek-aspek pernaskahan Islam pun terus dilakukan, sehingga semakin tampaklah betapa pentingnya manuskrip-manuskrip tersebut dalam konteks akademis internasional, hal yang seringkali dibaikan oleh dunia akademis di negeri sendiri.</p>
<p>Buku yang disunting oleh Stefanie Brinkmann dan Beate Wiesmueller ini merupakan salah satu bukti atas pentingnya manuskrip Islam dalam konteks keilmuan, seperti yang saya kemukakan di atas. Sejumlah artikel yang ditulis oleh sarjana-sarjana pemerhati manuskrip menunjukkan bahwa manuskrip Islam merupakan sumber tak ternilai bagi tumbuhnya tradisi akademis dalam berbagai bidang, seperti sejarah, filsafat, kodikologi, kepustakaan, katalogisasi, dan bahkan yang paling belakangan adalah bagi perkembangan teknologi presentasi perpustakaan digital online.</p>
<p>Buku ini diawali oleh pengantar yang sangat baik dari kedua penyunting. Lebih dari sekedar sebuah pengantar terhadap artikel-artikel yang dikemukakan, kedua penyunting menyuguhkan informasi yang sangat berharga berkaitan dengan situs-situs di seantero jagat yang menyediakan berbagai fasilitas online berkaitan dengan katalog dan naskah-naskah keislaman, termasuk di dalamnya situs <a href="http://www.manuscripts-aceh.org/content/below/index.xml">naskah-naskah Aceh</a>, yang dihasilkan melalui kerja sama antara Museum Negeri Aceh, Leipzig University, Yayasan dan Museum Ali Hasjmy Banda Aceh, Pusat Kajian Pendidikan dan Kemasyarakatan (PKPM) Aceh, dan Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (Manassa).</p>
<p>Berikutnya, kumpulan artikel dalam buku ini dikelompokkan menjadi tiga bagian besar, yakni &#8220;Scholars and Manuscripts&#8221;, yang memuat tulisan, secara berturut-turut, Rosemarie Quiring-Zoche berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">an early manuscript of al-Baydawi&#8217;s </span>Anwar al-tanzil<span style="font-style:italic;"> and the model it has been copied from</span>; Oman Fathurahman, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">Further research on </span>Ithaf al-dhaki <span style="font-style:italic;">manuscripts by Ibrahim al-Kurani</span>; dan Arnoud Vrolijk, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">&#8220;entirely free from the urge to publish&#8221; &#8211; the 18th century attempts at an edition of the Arabic proverbs of al-Maydani.</p>
<p></span>Bagian kedua adalah &#8220;Codicology&#8221;, yang memuat tulisan Francois Deroche berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">Inks and page setting in early Qur&#8217;anic manuscipts</span>; Edwin P. Wieringa, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">Some Javanese characteristics of a Qur&#8217;an manuscript from Surakarta</span>; dan Nikolaj Serikoff, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">An Arabic &#8220;</span>Book of Dream<span style="font-style:italic;">&#8220;</span> <span style="font-style:italic;">from an Ottoman imperial collection</span>.</p>
<p>Bagian terakhir adalah &#8220;Collections, Cataloguing, and New Technologies&#8221;, yang berisi artikel Avihai Shivtiel berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">The Arabic manuscripts at the University of Cambridge and the position of the Cairo Genizah documents among other collections</span>; Michaela Hoffmann-Ruf, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">Private documents from Oman: the archive of the &#8216;Abriyin of al-Hamra</span>; Marijana Kavcic, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">Arabic manuscripts of the National and University library &#8220;St. Kliment Ohridski&#8221;, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia</span>; dan artikel bersama oleh Stefannie Brinkmann, Thoralf Hanstein, Verena Klemm dan Jens Kupferschmidt, berjudul <span style="font-style:italic;">From the past to present: Islamic manuscripts in Leipzig</span>.</p>
<p>Saya sangat berbangga hati menjadi bagian dari para penulis dalam buku ini, meski jujur saya merasa masih jauh dari sejajar dengan nama-nama lain di sana. Saya hanya berharap bahwa kontribusi kecil saya dalam buku ini dapat mendorong minat sarjana-sarjana Indonesia lainnya untuk turut melirik kajian dan pemeliharaan manuskrip Indonesia khususnya, yang sementara ini masih banyak terbengkalai.</p>
